The Worldwide Friends was founded soon after the orchestra began. During the orchestra's first tour to Ireland, conductor Lygia O'Riordan received a letter from Mr William Walshe, who became the founder of the Worldwide Friends. In that letter he suggested that we should found the Friends. Moreover, a generous cheque to found the Friends was included in the envelope. Since then, the Friends are now spread over four continents.

Ensemble XXI is a completely independent orchestra and does not receive any government or city subsidies. We rely greatly on the support of the Worldwide Friends who give us the independence necessary for artistic freedom. It  allows Ensemble XXI independence from sponsorship sources that are not always compatible with the orchestra’s ideals and philosophy.

All donations, no matter how small, are gratefully accepted. If you are in a position to give a larger donation, or to interest others in donating or becoming Friends, this will be greatly appreciated.
