Previous to their studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and founding Ensemble XXI, Lygia O’Riordan and Pia Siirala both studied at Budapest's Liszt Academy with Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály's student, Professor Vikár László, one of the greatest living authorities on folk music. An enormous part of his teaching dealt with the psychology needed in collecting folk music and being prepared to wait, sometimes days, sometimes weeks, for the moment when the singer is ready to unveil the treasure. Then, the treasure must be recorded and preserved with  complete accuracy for posterity.

In many of the communities visited by Lygia O’Riordan and Pia Siirala in Russia, where extraordinary musical treasures revealed themselves, no Ethno-musicologist had yet stepped foot.
